Song and Cover a Week Season 1, Week 1

Hi honey! I'm home! It's time for a season of covers and songs! Each week we'll aim to write a full song from scratch, or do a cover of an existing song (or cover it and totally make it your own). The aim is to get creative juices flowing and have some fun. Of course, we'll keep track of how many everyone has done, and thus scores! No lead a week this time, as last time noone did any... if you feel this is unfair, and can help me find enough backing tracks, then let me know.

Date for submissions is sunday midnight, always. I will check every monday around 10am where I am and total up points then. Starting this like 2 days early as I know some of you have been looking forward to this.

We'll run for 8 or 10 weeks depending on participation.

    Anyway, here's the rules:
    - write one or more songs per week
    - cover one or more songs per week
    - 10 points for the first cover and first original song
    - points after that will be 5 for a second, 3 for a third, 1 for a 4th and 1 for every one after that.
    - apart from the 1st cover AND firs original, songs score like above. So you can submit a cover, a song, then 3 more of each say. this will give you 20pts for the first two, but then the next 6 will score 5, 3 and 4 times 1 giving you 32pts.
    - must be songs. 3 riffs stuck together do not a song make (otherwise it'd be easy to just submit 10 collections of riffs and get points, this is against the spirit of it all)
    - you're allowed 1 grindcore level joker song, but it still has to be a song. you must indicate this on your submission
    - submissions to be posted in this thread, soundcloud links, youtube, dropbox, whatever, as long as it can be played without paying something to someone.
    - you will not stealk from others except when doing covers
    - discretionary points awarded for extra work (like making a youtube music video, or anything entertaining)
    - submit by the time i have fed myself coffee on monday morning (but basically, sunday night somewhere in the world is your deadline).
    - all decisions by your benevolent dictator (me) are final

    Don't:
    - be a dick. songwriting is a skill you learn, and some may be better than others. By all means, give advice, encouragement, but don't go saying "this sux noob" etc. Penalties wil involve points deductions roughly equal to the amount of string and drum hits in the first minute of the liquid tension experiment 3 opening track.
    - steal shit of other people. covers are fine, lifting someone elses work and passing it off as your own, whether that be from a member, or from a different forum is not cool. Penalty for infringrement, see above
    - spam the thread with tons of non songs just to get points. If I feel someone is just putting crap up to score points for extra songs, I'll just not count the points.

For those of you who don't understand the don't be a dick:

Whoever wins this one, I'll send you a whole bunch of new limited edition MM.org guitar picks. Guaranteed to help you play like a man, smell more macho and be more popular with the ladies.

I'll throw in some of mine too which will offset all of the above. But they will improve your mastery of the F-word and make you talk faster.

Is the "SAW CHAMPION" banner still coming? Would be cool for those who won in the past to have it on our profile, just to show our superiority over those who don't know and don't care about the elite cork snifferey of SAW Cham-peen-shipness.

Will the picks also make the winner say "khakis" when they need the keys to their vehicle?

With a newborn, my time to dedicate to playing/recording has been greatly diminished lately. I have however been able to play around with some new VSTs, IRs, and such though, and I was able to dedicate some time last night to recording this track. This is a rule-breaker so I'm not expecting points, as I've had this song in my unfinished folder for a couple of years, but this was an opportunity to re-record the guitars, make some fixes and remaster it. So cut me some slack as this is all I had time for but still wanted to contribute!

I still need to go back and re-track the bass guitar as I'm not happy with it in a few places, and this should really have a singer on it, but overall I'm liking how this came out as a rough mix of what I hope to someday be a good song. Guitars are the JP2C red channel with a SD-1 in front, and I've loaded my Captor X with Jens Bogren IRs.

As a fellow new parent, I'm gonna toss up the thing I made today when I finally plugged in my midi keyboard because why the hell not.

Also "Kahfobs" (mine eats batteries for some reason)

Couldn't decide if I wanted to upload this just yet or not. Haven't quite gotten to the point where I dig the new guitar tones I'm getting with the Axe FX when they're in the mix together. So much so, I bought another Duncan Nazgul and put it in my Franken7 and recorded this one with it after setting up totally different presets, using different amps - same results: Meh. Probably gonna yank the Naz back out and reinstall the Imperiums.

I dig the clean tones, but the gain stuff still sounds 'muffled' to me, and when sweeping around with the EQ trying to pinpoint what exactly I don't like, I found some weirdness in the 800 range I pulled out. But, once I did that the OD guitars seemed to get lost a bit... oh well, back to the drawing board.

It's allowed, I mean, I've used riffs I have had lying around for years. The spirit of this is getting something done.

Now, if it had been a track you have had for ages, and are just posting it up just to have something, well, that's not fair, but this is! So yeah, you got yo points in!

The ones that get stolen by traditional means do, the ones that get stolen by someone with a transmitter outside your window don't...

you are probably pressing a button on it when it is in your pocket.

I have an idea for something going to try and put together for this. ( the song not your battery issues )

That's cooler and more Dream Theater-y than anything DT has done in 10 years. Fuckin' awesome man.

ok this is some stuff I just kind of vomited out into the computer. Iv'e been stuck in a topline/ melody/ low gain frame of mind lately and interested in how musical you can make something with just guitar and a bit of drums. It probably sounds like shitty wanking...
A few glaring flubs and no real ending developed but I think I can take this , tweak and enhance it and maybe make something somewhat decent.
Not super happy with the toan either...

I am mega shitty at all things recording so hopefully as the weeks go by and i do more I will get better at this stuff.
