  • I recorded a cover of “Hurt”

I popped this in General Music and it dropped to the bottom, so I’ll stick it in here.

I’ve been doing a solo acoustic/vocal version of this song for a while, basically covering the Sevendust version of it, which was a cover of Johnny Cash’s cover. I used the Sevendust tuning/arrangement, but went a bit nuts with the orchestra stuff at the end. It felt good to get this song out, even though it’s not an original. Working on originals right now is a little too close to the surface, but I really had to get somethin’ out and this is what it was.

I spent about 12 hours working on this Saturday, had all the music tracked for it and went to start the vocals. I got to the first chorus and it was ending a measure too early. I realized I somehow skipped the last chord change where it lets at B5 hang out. It doesn’t happen anywhere else in the song and since I mic’d an acoustic for it then put everything away, there was no way I’d be able to match the tone of the original tracks, so I had no choice but to re-record the whole fucking thing. I’ve got about 16 hours into it but you’re only hearing 4 of them.

I feel I’m definitely getting better at delivering something that effectively communicates an emotional state, which has been my whole trip for the last year. Some of the responses I’ve gotten have choked me up, due to the context of why I picked this particular song. It was cathartic to track the vocals and I was thinking/hoping that would end once I was done, but then I get some of these responses and I’m just tripped right out.

That was pretty good! Nice job, man. It's nice when lightning strikes and you can just power right through it.

      Thanks, brother!

Picking up an instrument lately has been a bit cathartic because I always feel like I need to be writing my own music or working on my own stuff and things are still just a little too close to the surface for that. As much as this one hits home, I didn’t have to sit there and write about it, I guess I just used it as a vehicle for a little bit to get some of that energy out.

I just ordered a book, The War Of Art; it’s supposed to be about keeping yourself in that creative mindset all the time. The best days in my life are when the music is just flying out and I barely have time to keep up with how fast it comes in my head.

Thanks brother! Used my AxeFX for a bunch of the effects on this, lots of the delays and reverbs on pretty much everything but the drums came from the AxeFX. Vocals were a bit to get over the top of the music in the softer/whisper parts.

For a brief time while listening, I was struck with Fractalitis. I even went looking for one afterward but I just wouldn't use it enough.

It’s akin to condoms, good sir. They might sit around unused for a while, but when finally used, you’re really fuckin’ glad ya got ‘em.
