    PC set up

I’m getting a “new to me” pc this week and I’m going to be wiping it and setting it up specifically for recording. Any tips or tricks from the pros for getting the most out of it?

It’s a 2 year old HP Omen Obelisk 875 my son was using for gaming, he upgraded so I got this for next to nothing. i7 cpu(not sure which one) 512gb ssd, 1tb hd, 16gb ram, and 1660 gpu.

Aside from loading Reaper, plug-ins, and transferring data, any tips?

Keep your programs installed on the OS drive and keep your data (Reaper projects, etc) on the other drive.

For the love of God, never keep files in any of the “My Documents|Music” folders within your profile. The reason I store my files outside of my computer profile is because of the computer goes bad, you can still pull the drive, Mount the HD as a removable USB HD and transfer your files off. If it’s buried inside the profile’s “My..” folder, you’re going to have permissions problems accessing them. It’s just a lot easier to do it the other way.

Reaper will fly high with those specs.

Just the typical setup stuff... go through the Start Up Programs and turn as much bullshit off as you can

Another thing most people dont seem to know:

Windows use Power Plans to reduce energy consumption. By Default its on Balanced but what you want is Maximum Power (or similar name). I see people complaining they have super powerful PC's and Reaper struggles... well that's one of the reasons.

I have a shortcut to easy access it when put it on full power when using reaper, then putting it on Balanced when just browsing, watching movies etc.

This dude explain it better in a short 2 min video

Thanks for all the info! I've been working on this a couple hours a night( or what I can) after work this past week. The only problem I've run into was installing the Fortin Cali Suite. For whatever reason, even though everything said installation complete, the executable would not execute(not sure if that's the right way to put it). I emailed Neural tech support explaining what was going on and within a couple hours I had a response with a working solution. Killer customer service! Now with all plugins, Kemper rig manager, etc, installed it's time to start moving all my projects over, hopefully I'll have time to finish it up this weekend

I was so bummed my family got me new pc and since then I always back my work on external DR, I done one last night.

I have to get a new PC some point as this one is over 10y old but still going.

To be fair, having a backup of the things you consider important is 100% your responsibility and nobody else's. Never have only one copy of something you care about, and if you do, never give that one copy to someone else and expect them to know that it's important.

Drive space is cheap and backing things up takes all of half an hour to come up with something you can set and forget.

True, I learned it hard way like I always do. I have separate DR now where I store everything I care about.
