So those mods I said I was doing to my Charvel (Yo Dawg, we heard you like green)

So green'd your green so your green could green green.

The good news is: this looks sick as fuck.
The bad news is: Holy shit these pickups blow.

I took a punt, thought I'd tear the guts out and just go for something out of my comfort zone (boredom).

Truth be told, I'm just not a Dimarzio guy. I've tried several boosts, played with pickup height, amp settings... They just feel like dogshit under my fingers Muddy, too hot, shrill, bloated lows. I pick up any of my other guitars after playing this now and they feel so much tighter and more responsive. Hell, this Evo makes a JB feel like an EMG.

Such a letdown. But nevermind. At least it's solved my pickguard conundrum I do prefer gloss finishes with this finish, so I'm gonna make a 1-ply gloss black guard, but bevel it this time. Gonna just go back to a JB bridge, YJM Fury neck

You need an angle shot to show the edge of the pickguard!

Yeah, I’m also not much of a DiMarzio guy. They always feel stiff and lifeless under my hands.

What neck model did you go with? Also, why the fuck would you get an EVO? Yuck.

Looks sick! But yeah, Evo sucks balls, hard. I’ve only ever really liked the two Satriani sets, and the Breeds.

Chopper in the neck. Which I do actually like, and have had a few times before. It's one of the only "rail" type single-coils that I actually think sounds anything like a single-coil, whilst still being beefy enough to keep up with a humbucker.

Evo was indeed a bad idea, but the consensus out there isn't that it's bad, to be honest! Most people say it's "bright/tight", which suits me. Turns out they're all absolutely fucking deaf. It's the only explanation. This is probably the least tight pickup I think I've ever played. That includes super mushy vintage PAF's.

Oh well. Before I even finished this project I thought it was a bad idea It just had "regret" written all over it. It looks kinda cool but also a bit silly/gimmicky to me, so I'm happy with just reverting everything back to black

I think that looks awesome. Too bad about the EVO. I think you might like the Dimarzio Norton - I at least thought it sounded fairly similar to a JB.

well this is the crossroads I'm now at - Do I just revert it back to black and go back to Duncan pickups that I know I like, or do I continue with Dimarzio and just try to find a bridge pickup of theirs that I like?

On that subject, does anybody know what pickup of theirs I can try that does that percussive JB thing? Tight, articulate etc?

I'm sick of going on YouTube demos, they tell you nothing. I wanna try the AT-1 for example, but all the demos are of people doing blues-wanking.

Like I wrote above, I thought the Norton sounded similar to a JB. I've got one in my RG760, and an EVO2 in my S540. Of these two I like the Norton a lot more. This is recorded with the Norton, through Lepou amp sims using your IR's.

This is the EVO2 in the S540 with the exaxt same settings (different tuning though)

So the EVO2 is way more scratchy and has some unpleasantness in the midrange/high-end that the Norton lacks. I guess the EVO2 should be fairly similar to the EVO.

That was gonna be my suggestion. I know they make them.

If you can get em in green, you might try the Imperium or the Fortitude... but, if you just don't like Dimarzios, you probably will still be disappointed.

They do make the JB in green, I had one. Unfortunately I a) Have OCD levels of disgust when it comes to mixing brands of pickup, and b) the Dimarzio green and the Seymour Duncan green are massively different. The Dimarzio green matches the guitar much better (more neon, vs the Duncan "lime").

Shit man, that Norton smokes the Evo2! I'll look into that then...

But quite honestly, my heart is just saying JB/YJM like I had before. I kinda just want the Dimarzio stank off my guitar

I had a YJM for a while and I liked it.

I think the JB sucks in everything, however.

When I used to play a Chamleon or Triaxis, I loved the JB. When I started using overdrives in front of amps, I gravitated away from them entirely.

Pickups are SO subjective though. My absolute favorites are DiMarzio Super Distortions and Evos. The Evo especially is super hot and grinds like crazy, while the Super Distortion just sounds like my perfect pickup in every guitar I put it in.

BKP does custom work - maybe you could shoot them a note with a pic of the guitar and see what they can do. They were super easy to work with when I needed a custom pickup.

Or just keep the Evo because it rules
