Ultimately this guitar will probably be damned silly, but for the price, the risk/reward ratio seemed right, so I had to try it.

Yeah I don't think I could stomach a headless guitar. That's not it for sure. Maybe one day my tastes will change, but for now, nah not that one.

One of those reverse headstock Jackson dinky pros with the direct mount pickups from the 90s?

You know, I still need to try to get my hands on a mid-90s Soloist. The few I played back when I was younger were such amazing guitars, they nearly played themselves.

The bang to buck ratio is still ok, there are good deals to be found on older MIJ Jacksons. I love most of mine 🤘 but I see Jackson doesn't have a monopoly on the offset dot inlays! Congrats dude! Should have kept the MBM1 I had...

Was gonna be my guess, not that I'd have been able to remember Cassidy's password du jour, I had to Google it.

This is super close. I have the 8 string version inbound. The RG / Universe shape is the most comfortable for me of any guitar, and if I ever was going to try my hand at an 8 string, I’d want it to be fanned fret. The idea of playing a shorter scale 8 just didn’t make sense for me. So this is a fairly inexpensive trial of 8 string guitars for me to see if I get along with it at all. If not, resale will probably be close to list, but I think with the shape of the guitar and the style of the neck, this one might just work.

Friends don’t let friends leave Ibanez guitars stock though, so I’m going to have to find a way to fit a Super Distortion 8 string pickup in this guitar. I think I can just swap the base plates, but we’ll see.

God that's even worse. Come on man, have some self respect!

Not to poop on your NGD but I had an RG2228 (the expensive one) and the RGA8 (the bargain one like this) and the low end one was terrible. It had no redeeming qualities at all. The neck sucked, the pickups sucked, the tuners sucked, it played like shit and it sounded like shit.

Maybe you'll get lucky here and get the one nice $400 Ibanez they've ever made but the odds are against you. Plugging a damn fanned fret bargain basement djent box into your $3000 Mesa amps is heresy!

Chris - you may very well be right, but I’m not going to spend $1200 on an 8 string unless I know I want to permanently own that guitar. This guitar has great reviews everywhere and the demos on YT sound great, so I’m going to give it a shot on this $600 guitar and see if I even like 8 strings. Still seems like too many strings, but we’ll see. If the guitar is great, awesome, I’ll upgrade the pickups and be done. If it has problems, I can always return it. Ultimately it seems like no real risk and a nice potential upside

I need to snag a Thomann $120 guitar and plug it through a few Mesa amps just to up the heresy level for you

I don't know what it is but I love the RG8 (pre 2014) guitars, they're great guitars for the money and they've never done me wrong. Paid no more than 400 for them, too.

You have a PWH! The RG8 is bad and you should feel bad. We are all old men, too damn old to play shitty djent trash like this! It's like I'm taking crazy pills!

I use the RG8 for metal....more like "old man, but cool metal". In all seriousness though, great guitar for the money. My band has a few 8-string tunes...we keep it old school though.

There’s a lot of difference between the shitbox RGA8 you had, and the current entry stuff from Ibanez. It’ll likely be a serviceable instrument to see if he likes 8-strings or not. It’s positively stupid to spend a ton of money on a niche instrument to see if he likes it.

The RGA8 is pretty nice with some upgrades. I'm not sure of another mahogany 8-string Ibanez, period and it's got the Fixed Edge 8 like the 2228 or the M8M. I modded one for my friend, stripped it to the raw mahogany and swapped on a pair of Dimarzios. Thing sounds great plays great.

My only complain is the extended scale length still sucks for anything higher than those two lowest strings. You might as well just cut off the other 6 strings. Nothing light enough to make them feel playable.

desertdweller only thing I'd say about the Ibanez fanned 8 is that they kinda boogered the placement of the straight fret. Chords are super funky down at the bottom, would've been better ~5th fret or 7th max.
