    NGD: I'm Seeing Double Here

Ever since grabbing an Ibanez 70s lawsuit Les Paul, I've made sure to keep a keen eye on more models from that era. I remember missing out on a Flying V and have regretted it since.

Then this came along. The price was a little steep than what I normally would pay for, but decided to pull the trigger.

It's not often a 2402 Double Neck comes around my direction, and I've always wanted one. So I snagged it and took it home.

The condition was still surprisingly good for it's age (74 model) and it sounds grand. I'll probably keep this stock for now. Already got all my Zeppelin/Rush/Eagles novelty out of my system so I'm focusing on using it to write something that lets me use both necks simultaneously. Nobody uses double necks anymore so it's practically a relic dad rock instrument. It'll be nice for me to try something fun and creative with it.

So yeah, no NGDs for me for a while. Works out well since I'll be recording my next solo album in a few months and that needs funding too.

Now if I can find a 540STN at a decent price...

Wow, that's awesome. Certainly don't see those every day!

Amazing! Wow, that's a rare bird.

I'd love to pick up a lawsuit-era Ibanez Les Paul, but I never seem to be able to find them for a decent price.

Just get a Greco. Made in the same factory without the bigger name.

Cheers gents. This was definitely one I had to jump on quickly. I couldn't imagine this would've lasted on the market long.

Grecos show up but tend to get snagged quickly.

I'm fortunate I have a some pawn stores that specialise in vintage gear and they get a fair amount of Grecos and other lawsuit rarities (albeit mostly used). Are there any similar kind of shops in your end?

Dude that is awesome! I can't think of any reason practically speaking that I would own one, but damn I'd love to have one.

The ones I've seen lately have been bolt-on or 90s. But keep an eye on pauls boutique, they constantly have MIJ 70s guitars roll through (and MIJ/CIJ fenders)

John McLaughlin is the ultimate hero of the 1275. Whenever I pick up a 12-string electric, I inevitably gravitate towards some arpeggio that sounds like "Birds of Fire".

They have a sweet MIJ Epi LPC right now.

Unfortunately I was knee deep in pre-production so I couldn't play this as much as I wanted. Will try to get a clip some time soon.

Man, I remembered learning Birds Of Fire years ago. The lead was straight and simple but it was the whole musical soundscape driven by the 12 string part is what sounds so bizarre to play. I'll have to relearn it again.

Lots of Genesis too Those are great guitars, I had one of those in maybe '78 or '79? It was the set neck version. It was what got me to get rid of my LPC and switch to Ibanez Artists.

As for Ibanez & Greco Les Pauls, there are a lot of great Japanese makers of LP type guitars, and one of the best places to find them is on the MyLesPaul forum in the "other single cuts" classifieds. Lots of stellar instruments by FGN, Tokai, Crews, Navigator, and even the occasional Momose.

I respect Paul Gilbert's loyalty of grabbing any guitar with an Ibanez logo and winging it to the point of serious jealousy. I love his vintage collection.

That said he has been grabbing an Epiphone Olympic lately though namely for nostalgia sake.

Me too. I also spotted that, and I think that after all these years, it's really fine. I just laughed myself stupid at his TC MojoMojo demo vid, as well. Holy shit.

Ken I make a point of pronouncing it that way, too. If he really is cool, he'd have made peace with it in the same way as James "cockney rhyming slang" Blunt: "My favourite part of the female anatomy!" I've endured an interpretable surname all my life and am quite happy to embrace it.

So after spending some time with this monster...

I've played many guitar shapes and styles but oddly enough, SGs are the one shape that doesn't seem to like me. This on the other hand I've had no problems so far. Only catch is everything else that comes with the fact that it's a multi neck instrument: heavier than usual, extra neck, general unwieldiness, and the extra mental energy to navigate through everything. It's certainly a bloody fun time though.

I'm still keeping this stock. But if I were to mod it, I'll probably whack a pair of BKP Mules in the 6, and possibly a Stormy Monday or PG Blues set on the 12. But no rush on that if not at all.

Trying to right music that requires to use both necks simultaneously has got me to my first hurdle. Being a mono output instrument, it's hard to write something doing that especially at higher gain levels. Playing at clean to lower gain yields better results but also forces you to git gud at your left and right hand muting and tapping techniques. I guess I could mod the guitar to have a dual output for each neck, but that's a prospect I really can't be assed thinking about.

This is the one occasion where I don't miss any notes above the 20th fret.

It was a long-running joke back on the Ytsejam mailing list in the '90s.
