  • Sort of NGD

So I've got a special (sort of) NGD here really. My Grandad is now in his late seventies and has slowed down playing. He still 'rehearses' with one of his long time friends and bandmates playing mainly 60s/70s music (Beach Boys, Eagles, Hollies etc).

I went to visit him last weekend for the first time in months because of COVID, and he told me he wanted me to have his favourite guitar as he can no longer play it like he wants to be able to. He's happy strumming on his Danelectro 6 and 12 strings.
I told him I would play it and look after it for him, but definitely wouldn't accept him giving it to me.

    Here it is:

Its a PRS S2 Standard, which has had the cherry finish sanded off back to bare mahogany and then refinished with a really nice satin wax/oil finish.
He also said the pickups are Seymour Duncans but didn't remember which ones (my guess is '59s).

    That's awesome, man!!

I couldn't imagine the sentiment around that!

My Grandad certainly is awesome. I was brought up mainly by my Grandparents until the age of 13 and it was he who got me into guitars.
When I got married at the end of 2019 we got up and played 3 songs together at the end of the night, one of my favourite memories ever.

Seriously! The standard finished S2 singlecuts have always looked pretty boring to me, but that looks really cool.

I think he got a bit lucky in that this particular piece of mahogany is quite good looking, and its a one piece body too.

I'm pretty sure most USA PRSes have one-piece mahogany bodies. Seeing them with a join is very rare, even on the S2 models. Paul's wood buyers must be scooping up a lot of really big nice boards.
