    Mastodon - Pushing the Tides

Chorus (and the little bridge after the last chorus) rules and triggers my "Mastodon" nerve, but the rest of the song is just meh and bores me to death.

I had to check to make sure I didn't have two videos playing at once here. This production is a mess.

Pretty forgettable. I want to like these guys but they don't make it easy.

Definitely the same flavor of sound as the last album, and I hope there's a better track on the album, like the last one!

Yeah it does .. tune is ok but the mix is very distracting.

I watched the video (which is cringey-dumb af) and the sound was MUCH better.

The mix... well... have you guys never listened to a Mastodon song before?

Uh oh...two misses in a row for me. Will withhold judgement for now though.

These guys are capable of writing such good music. How have they gone this long without being better?

They'll always have a special place in my heart, though. I remember seeing them once, and Brent was in the middle of his solo from The Czar, and his sound started cutting out, so the guitar tech ran out to help, and he just totally like its nothing kicked the guy out of the way

My second story was watching King Diamon play Abigail in its entirety next to Brann.

Ugh....lyrics hit a little close to home. I dig it, but that'll be getting skipped for a while to come.

This would actually be a good song if it wasn't for the utterly shambolic mix as Chris said. Actusllyvreminds me of the mastodon I used to like but fuck me....and my ears apparently

I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but I love all the sludgy stuff leading up to Crack the Skye. They're one of my favourite bands. Crack the Skye I like, but I always saw that as a one-off prog experiment that worked. IMHO it's just been downhill from there. The Hunter had some weak spots, but had some great songs, too. OMRTS was a bit worse, but similar. The last album and this one seem a lot more homogenous and bland. Lots of similar verse-chorus songs, almost all singing, and really weird production

At the same time, I'm pretty sure they keep getting bigger with each album, so I guess it's working for them. Maybe I'm just becoming the grumpy hipster who only likes the demos and debut album.

Funny, I’ve had the total opposite response to their albums. They just keep getting better and better for me and they’re the only band that’s ever happened with for me. Especially at this point in their career. I wasn’t too big on their early stuff when it came out and I’m still not. It wasn’t until I heard “Colony Of Birchmen” that I dug one of their songs. I remember seeing the premiere of the “Oblivion” video on MTV2 when it came out and it caught me immediately. I didn’t listen to anything else but Crack The Skye for a straight year, so much that I really burnt it out and I’ve barely listened to it in the last 8 years, but the biggest reason is they keep putting out killer albums that I love more and more. I love the shit Brann comes up with for the vocals, love the interplay, the 70’s prog-but-we-still-drop-down-to-A-sometimes.

The production on their albums is top notch and I’m waiting until I have the actual album before I get too concerned about this, though it wouldn’t be the first Botrill mix I didn’t dig. I love the layering they do, all the percussion stuff. Funny, I generally wear my influences on my sleeve when I write my own music, but they don’t really come through at all. I wonder if I was too old by the time I got into them?
