Pretty great Boston cover (Portnoy, Hoekstra)

Featuring the vocalist from that fantastic Roxette cover.

Side note: "Fantastic Roxette cover" isn't something I ever expected to write, but here we are.

And then there's this. Mixed/mastered by Thomas McRocklin, too.

The vocalist is in TSO now too, good for him.

You have to be a pretty damned great singer to take on "Long Time". Nice!

Brad Delp was easily one of the top 5 rock singers ever. The worst thing about Tom Scholz's idiotic level of perfectionism might be that it robbed the world of having more of Delp's work to enjoy.

The other thing about that video is that I'm suddenly having GAS for a Jackson Phil Collen sig, and I have absolutely no need for one!

The Beato breakdown of More Than A Feeling is like a vocal doubling masterclass.

Also, as a side note, I saw Symphony X do "Foreplay/Long Time" as their soundcheck for the very first ProgPowerUSA.

The Mikes all alternating between the arpeggios and the actual parts was pretty insane, and of course Allen drilled the vox.

I wish they'd put that in the setlist. Of course, SymX fans were always complaining about them leaving various of their own songs out of the set, so they probably wouldn't have dared play a cover.

^ Fuck yes, that rips! He has the same swagger/attitude that old 90's Sebastian Bach had.

I'd love to hear him on a Lynch Mob album.

He reminds me of Jorn Lande. Which is a good thing.

I bought that album on vinyl. It's killer! Dude cops a great Dio style vocal too.

Dino has been in TSO for quite a while (5 or 6 years I believe), I'm so glad Paul and Jon found him.

He's been killing it since he walked into the U.S. He is fairly famous in Croatia and has been since he was like a kid.

I've chatted with Dino quite a bit. He's super smart, humble and just works his tail off really. Very encouraging of his peers too. He just loves music.

I love his cover of "Judgement Day" with his band "Animal Drive."

And this by far, is the best Dirty Shirley song.

Chris, I'm with ya. I wish he was in "Lynch Mob" or whatever Lynch is calling it now.

Oh yeah, he's only 28 too.

                              EDIT:

                              Here ya go Chris:

Well you're not lying about him being famous in Croatia since he was a kid; turns out he was the winner of the first Junior Eurovision back in 2003. He's come a long way since then obviously!

I finally got to check this out (I’m normally on a hotspot in my office at work), Goddamn!!!!!

Man, I’m in love with that vocalist. That tone and delivery is like, exactly what I’ve been working towards for so long now. That smokey grit that comes out all the time, regardless of how loud or soft he’s singing. Dude’s technique is fucking flawless.

I actually dug the solos, too. Normally when someone starts shredding where shredding didn’t exist prior, I roll my eyes or fast forward, but Joel’s the fucking man.

Regarding the OP: After a few more listens (because it's awesome) - god damn Portnoy is fantastic. I honestly think that if I only had the drum track to this tune in isolation I'd still know it was him.

Typically eye contact in a YouTube video doesn't get to me, but it's like Joel Hokestra stares straight into your soul.

You should see how many times I’ve tweeted to both Portnoy and Toontrack to bug them about doing a Portnoy SDX. He’s had my favorite drums sounds for over 20 years now and I’m not sure that’ll ever change. I used to watch his instructional videos as entertainment and was just as big of a Portnoy fan as I was a Petrucci fan back in the day. These days I’m a bigger Portnoy fan than Petrucci fan hahaha.

From Awake on his drum sounds have been killer, especially FII and SFAM. That snare on both FII and SFAM is just perfect. His kicks on 6DOIT were beefy as fuck but still nice and woody, not as EQ’d as they were on previous albums. If I could blend his snare sound from SFAM with the kicks from 6DOIT I’d never use another drum sound.

Him, Mario Duplantier, Virgil Donati, shit even Lars, all dudes who are instantly recognizable the second they start playing. It’s interesting; drums in the metal scene have gotten progressively more intense and while guitarist are always getting credit for that, seems drummers are an afterthought these days.
