I'm watching that second video and I can't figure out if he's actually using a flat pick, or if he's just holding his fingers in a way that gets the same kind of attack. Because when he suddenly flips to the fast finger-picked passage, where does the plectrum go?

Either he's really good at palming the pick really quickly, or he's not using a flat pick at all.

He is playing this with no-pick. He's just holding his thumb really close and probably using the nail.

I can do this myself, it's not hard when you practice it enough.

I think he's using a pick at times, you can see that he takes it out every now and then and then hides it somewhere in his palm (in both videos). The finger picking is super impressive anyway,

Look at 20 seconds in the second video, he flicks a pick out of somewhere (same at e.g. 30 secs in the Tornado of Souls one). If you don't believe these images, slow down the video at that time and check yourself, it's not hard to do on youtube, just click the cog icon and choose playback speed.
