I haven't kept up with them in forever, didn't know they weren't defunct. I remember being way into that style and that geographic area and then Ulcerate's "Destroyers of All" came out and I was like "Can't top this". I wore that album out. Gigan was biggish too back then, even though they aren't Aus/NZ. They had the album with the Sunn O looking guys on the cover in the same general vein of extremely dissonant stuff.
I haven't checked out the last two Ulcerate albums yet either for that matter.Comment

I don't know if it was Valve official, but I did see something making the rounds yesterday or the day before about a new mod or game mode to celebrate the games tenth anniversary. Available through Steam though. So I assume it's pretty good. Not made by Valve, but they don't really let people hype up mods for their games on Steam unless they are at least decent.
I've played one of the games a grand total of once, don't remember if it was 1 or 2, not really my thing. Didn't really pay attention. It was in the news recently though. Got quite a bit of hype.
Maybe something like the Black Mesa treatment for Portal or something. Definitely a mega popular game, so kind of surprised Valve didn't do something big for the tenth anniversary.

Maybe not stare into death and be still but shrines of paralysis is one of the best dm albums of the last decade.
On the topic of Portal, their production kind of puts me off, I find it abrasive for the sake of being abrasive, I don't think it adds anything to their sound other than make it hard to listen to and I like stuff like Skaphe so the dissonance is not my issue.
They have made a move towards a bit more melody in their stuff in the last album and by the sounds of this new track also, which isn't terrible, but I think they need to get away from that crazy dry as fuck everything is right fucking THERE production for me to spend any time getting into it.

I call it Cavernous Death Metal. I don't think it has a generally agreed upon term. The whole abyssal/cavernous thing has some variety, some are more dissonant and jarring, some are more traditional and doomy, some is more "bestial'. Some is more Incantation, some is more Gorguts, some is more Demilich. It's broad, but not that broad.
The entire thing pretty much fell apart due to racist fuckery though. The labels snapping up all the upcoming bands are racist fucks and the Disma thing with Craig Pillard from Incantation was set to be pretty big until everyone discovered he was a White Supremacist.
Luckily Portal is on Profound Lore, who are legit. The most critical thing people say about Profound Lore is they are a little hipstery. A bunch of bands in that general vibe got snapped up by cunts running white supremacist labels like Nuclear War Now and Satanic Skinhead Propaganda.
Some bands don't even get associated with that shit knowingly. As far as NWN. "Satanic Skinhead Propaganda" is pretty obvious, hard to say a band wouldn't know what they are getting into there. It definitely sucks for the foreign ones who don't speak or read English very well who don't even know what they are getting into though. Some people need the advice of "Don't let it go to your head if someone wants to press your shit on vinyl, check the outfit out first." Some bands of course aren't even in control. Some bands don't know who is pressing or issuing their shit in obscure territories they have never been to either.
A couple of the big gnarly cavernous Australian/NZ abyssal death metal are associated with labels run by racist cunts. Knowingly or not. In terms of obscure stuff I usually stick with buying from Osmose, who are french.
Check out "The Ominous Circle", you will like it. I think they only have one record out. I think they are from Portugal or somewhere in Latin America. They hopped on the lame ultra trve trend of obscuring faces, but the music is cool. It's more Teitanblood Cavernous than Gorguts/Demilich Cavernous, but same general vibe.
Some other obvious shit to check out is Teitanblood too. They aren't Gorguts cavernous, but they have some really gnarly abyssal stuff.
I don't really listen to an entire record of theirs all the way through, but the drums at the start of "Sleeping Throats of the Antichrist" are my jam.
There were actually a couple fests that were centered around bands with that vibe that fell apart due to the promoters involved. NWN had a fest with quite a few of the cool bands with that abyssal thing going, they had to axe their entire forum to try dodge it, didn't work. Not surprising. Those guys are cunts.
The latest big cavernous death metal one from the Aus/NZ region is definitely racist cunts. Diocletian. Somehow they got on Profound Lord too. You have to watch out for that shit. A bunch of black metal posers infested the genre, and a bunch of the guys who were OGs also kind of turned out to be cunts. It's not even subtle, they have songs that start with lyrics like "Progeny of Europa".
If Bardo Mythology or deathmetalunderground.org sing their praises you definitely have to check to make sure it's not like, Golden Dawn party recruitment material metal.
