    Hagerman VALVE (tube boost demo/review)

The VALVE is a ‘keep on’ pedal, and Jim Hagerman classifies it as a boost (upward of 20dB), but it is a tone charmer that has overdrive properties. At $129 USD, the VALVE is one of the best bangs for the buck, as it fattens up a Strat, makes humbuckers growl, and simply adds more life and dimension. Moreover, by placing a boost in front of the VALVE, to push its 12AU7 tube even harder, there is a BK Butler pedal effect, as demoed in the final lead section to the intro composition on the accompanying video.

Now, keep in mind that this is a tube-driven pedal with no silicon involved, operating in starved-plate and starved-heater mode (viz., the tube receives adequate voltage, but the plate and grid are starved of higher voltages that would bring them within their intended headroom and total harmonic distortion parameters) and all done on a typical 9VDC power supply (also works with 12V). This configuration has not been successful until now, although others have tried. The Matsumi 12V ValveCaster attempts this, but has limited performance due to not addressing grid current at such a low bias.

I did indicate what it does to a tone in general terms, but insofar as my own experience, I added the Hagerman Valve to two different tube amps (Orange Tiny Terror and the Peavey Classic 20), as well as the Fractal FM3 modeler. Jim Hagerman claims great things with solid state amps, but I did not have access to that platform. Without fail, the results were superb. This full-bandwidth pedal resulted in tube amps sounding thicker and richer; and the FM3 becomes more energized and realistic. Clean signals sounded glassier and vibrant, merely by placing the VALVE’s ‘level’ at parity (about 9:30 o’clock); and once past that level, there is increasing dirt/breakup, and to the point of a classic rock sound (with level cranked full). And yet, the amp still retains its underlying tonal characteristics. Dirty and hi-gain amps mixed very well with the VALVE, and with greater richness, gain and boost at only 10-o’clock, as though modded and super-charged. Of course, you can get a lot more saturated for those creamy, gooey leads by placing the level all the way up for lead solos.

The VALVE is true-bypass and well-built with a heavy aluminum chassis power-coated in black with white lettering/graphics. It comes with a 12AU7 tube, which should be removed during transport, unless you have a protective pedalboard cover/case. Its design permits it to be Velcroed as usual, but also screwed down into a wooden pedalboard or bolted onto a metal unit. As mentioned, it takes both 9VDC and 12VDC power supplies, requiring only 135mA power (150mA if running 12V) via a standard negative-center cable. Other specs include 100k ohm input impedance and 100Hz to 20kHz bandwidth. One caveat is that the VALVE’s level control knob is small, which makes it a bit awkward if changing the level on stage. However, that is where an extra boost comes in handy (such as the Hagerman Boost), i.e., the VALVE can be left on and used to add dimension to rhythms, and then the added Boost engaged for fat leads and that BK Butler effect.

Hate to be a dick dude, but when you post Guitar World/blog style posts here it really turns people off. It can kind of come off like spam. I don't think you're spamming but it's not that engaging when we're a community of friends that make fun of the size of Chris' mini wang or talk about boobs and occasionally guitar gear.

I found this one amazing tip at http://fiscalresponsibility.page that helped me save up for all the OD pedals.

What does Jim Hagerman think about it? Maybe http://fiscalresponsibility.page has that info too. And maybe some additional helpful info, such as "Who is Jim Hagerman, and why do I care what he thinks about OD pedals?"

I saved a bundle by using Times New Roman, that's a tip I learned from Jim Hagerman over at http://fiscalresponsibility.page

No problem... I'll stop posting here. I do gear reviews as a hobby, and put enough work into them... and on gear I like (in case someone may be interested). And the font is Calibri (similar to Arial), not Time Roman. Later, dudes.

                  Oh jeez.

I think we've had this conversation before, man, but this is a community, and one where I've known some of these assholes for the better part of two decades. That didn't happen because we copied and pasted posts made elsewhere here and ignored feedback when we did, it happened because we all took the time to get to know each other, listen to each other, and learn from each other, rather than just treated this group as a faceless audience.

The fact that you're posting in Calibri, not Times New Roman, is probably the single LEAST important part of this whole conversation.... save for the fact that in either case it's not the forum default text, which means your post is something you copied-and-pasted from another site to post here. This isn't that kind of community.

If you're looking to expand your audience for your gear reviews, and are going to get your hackles up when someone points out that you clearly copied and pasted a post from somewhere else, then you're right, this probably isn't the place for you, and you should stop posting.

If you're looking to get to know some of the regulars here, well, you're going about it in an awfully weird way, but maybe you could start by treating this as a two-way street, rather than looking at this is somewhere where you can post and we can listen.

Yeah, it's more the way your posts come off dude. Like, when someone here gets something new, it's like "Hey guys, check out this new cool electric kazoo I got" and we all are like "awesome!". Someone might ask how it sounds, etc. I can only speak for me, but seeing a wall of text that comes off like a paid promotion (not that I think you're getting paid) is just super off putting.

Not contributing? I post compositions and I get flack (rude and retarded, to say the least). I work my ass off on a review, without pay, and I get flack. Whatever. If you check the number of subscribers, and how many it takes to make a buck, you would know I'm not doing this for the YouTube exposure. Duh! I have a background in technical writing, sorry I don't come off like some moron who just bought a pedal and can barely put a sentence together. Maybe some of you should stop head banging on a cement wall, chill and support others.

With all due respect, you're looking at this backwards.

You're creating content elsewhere. You want an audience for that content. You, a new member with no previous ties to this community in any former iteration, are copying and pasting that content here, and expecting us to mutely appreciate it. When instead you're getting feedback on that content - constructive, not harsh but but not blindly positive - you're taking offense to that.

You're not contributing, you're asking for our ears and our eyes, our "support" as you put it, and in return expecting our silence. That's disrespectful as hell.

Actually, never have I asked for an opinion or approval. Although I'm speaking to a small group that can't play worth shit, can't compose, can't review, but feel the need to hate the good for being good. Pathetic, but it is what it is... a sounding board for those with nothing to offer except hate. Have fun, you bunch of twats!

Well, you certainly asked for an audience, and if you want an audience that offers no opinions, just reads and listens, then I don't know what to tell you, buddy, but you're not going to find it here. Have fun - sounding off on what's going to be your last post here isn't really convincing any of us that your absence is any great loss.

Already gone, gents. I love the part about us "hating the good for being good." Eh, I tried to engage without him on that first track for his album, on the writing, but he was pretty disinterested in hearing what any of us had to say, so long as we clicked the play button. Clearly, this is our loss.

JJ Rodriguez Oh, sorry, didn't realise that part of that forum required a login:

User BDJohnson has been banned. After a busy morning posting links to tin hat conspiracy theories, and then ranting when his thread was closed, he was due for a spell in the cooler.

However, on closer inspection it turns out this is his second attempt to pollute us with tinhattery - his first go, user Brian Johnson was binned a while back, for posting yet more tinhattery.

He may think his banning is a conspiracy, but it’s not - he’s banned for multiple accounts, and the unimaginative names he’s chosen really didn’t make it hard to link the two...
On there, it's strictly one person = one account, which I sometimes think is a shame, given all the fun we've had with comedy sock accounts over the years: Jeff's CabClone, Drew's Liver, etc.
