Had a friend unexpectedly reach out and tell me he was sending me a Boss MD-2 Distortion pedal because he had 2 and wanted to know what I thought of it.
I'm almost embarrassed to admit I'd never even heard of it before, but once I discovered the SD-1 & OD-2 from Boss, I never really looked at any of their distortion pedals ever again...
Anyway, he shipped it over and I hooked it up to my Jet City. Was really not expecting much at all, in fact I was already formulating how to explain I didn't much care for it before I even gave it a shot.
Well, I dimed the level, zipped the gain/boost and fired it up. I immediately liked it, but wasn't sure I liked it more than the SD-1. Then I messed with the Tone & Bottom knobs and wow. It gave the Jet City the depth it's been missing, which I'd planned on buying the Depth mod to add in. Immediate cab thump gloriousness. Pretty soon, I realized I'd been jamming for like 20 minutes straight and loving every second of it. I swapped back in my SD-1 and it didn't take long before I put the MD-2 back in front.
Then I thought "well, what does it sound like in front of the Marshall DSL1?" So, I put it in front of that and started playing and immediately got the tone I feared I would get when I first hooked it up. It was muddy, undefined and just meh. No amount of knob fiddling corrected it. I put the SD-1 back in front of the Marshall and >boom< it sounded glorious once more.
So, instead of buying another SD-1 eventually for the Jet, and a depth mod kit, I'm sticking with the MD-2. Really shocked, to be honest...
Next up, all the power cords for my growing number of pedals was making my OCD circuit fritz, so after some research and great recommendations on here, I grabbed an MXR DC Brick yesterday. Other than the typical, new MXR "Laser to the your Retina" LED light (note my hi-tech painters tape eye shield mod!), it seems like a great addition to the rig. Probably need to break down and buy an actual pedal board next or build one... I haven't had a chance to fire it all up just yet (it's only 6am here right now and the neighbors don't mind us so far so I'd like to keep it that way...
) but will later this morning when people won't mind a little gain-ey goodness coming from our townhouse.
