Picked up a hardly used Marshall DSL100HR this weekend for dirt cheap. I was thinking of getting the DSL20 mini head but this cost me a hair over what the DSL20 goes for new. Mixed feelings on it thus far. I can get an excellent saturated tone, when its on the 100watt setting. But at those levels, I cant play it for very long. Im unable to achieve the same kind of tone in the 50watt mode (a feature that drew me to the amp btw). Maybe Im just not used to dialing in Marshall type amps since im so used to 5150s/evh style amps. Maybe I need to check the biasing? *shrugs*.

    Congrats!

100w doesnt determine the volume though, the volume knob does. Set it to 100w, then the volume you want, then dial it in. Done.

Yea I get that, but it seems the power section has to be pushed a bit (more than im used to doing with a 6505) to get the right saturation. I got it sounding great on the 100 watt mode and then i flip it over to 50 and it sounded weak. This is why im wondering if its a biasing issue.

This is the risk we take with buying tube amps used. We dont always know whats been done with it or if there is an intermittent problem. I bought my 6505 full head used last summer. Seemed ok when I picked it up. Then it had a strange intermittent issue in the power amp section (presence was going to max intermittently). I took it apart to discover that one of the main capacitors was loose and had a cold solder joint. Luckily I know how to solder and fixed it myself but yea.

The DSL’s are definitely still in need of being pushed. It’s not like the 5150/6505 that sound good at low levels. It’s definitely a decent amp though; so if you can find a way to knock the volume down, it’ll do some good shit.

Yea when its sounding right, its freaking awesome. Ill play around with it more. If it doesnt suite my needs, I can sell it for more than what I paid and Ill use that $$$ to buy a new dls20 head.

As Jeff said, they need to be pushed. Maybe an attenuator of some kind so you can keep it in 100w mode without killing your ears/pissing off the entire neighbourhood?

I have that amp, I boost it with MXR GT-OD, and still sounds great on 50w mode. Sometimes I use Boss SD1 depending on my mood.

congrats on the amp and good luck getting the tone you like.

Fortunately, I live in a rural area and my setup is in a finished basement/mancave. The only person that hears me is my wife but shes really cool with me being a loud piece of shit as long as its before 10pm lol.
