    4x12 tolex change help.

    Hi guys

I would like to get your opinions about changing tolex on my 4x12. At the moment its grey colour and i want to make it black ( more metal) :p, I never done anything similar so I have no experience. I heard shoe polish can do that but is it any true? Or shall i spray paint ?

cab is jcm800 ( if that makes any difference)

It really bothers my OCD cab being grey and head being black

thank you in advance for your time and opinions.

Most tolex is plastic so i arent sure most dies etc will soak in.

Changing tolex isnt that hard though just be prepared to spend a lot of time removing the existing contact adhesive.

I have no problem removing I can take apart anything, but putting it back together is a other thing.

        Tony's right on the money.

        Once you have sanded off the old contact adhesive, it's all sorted from there. Though it has been a while for me, these set of videos are great;
So far, we have built a Champ 5F1 amp chassis from scrap parts and then constructed a finger-jointed pine cabinet to enclose it.....now, we will cover the ca...

I'd love to see how this turns out

Ever done wallpapering? Pretty much identical apart from easier as you arent doing it on a vertical surface

I really should think about redoing the tolex on my 1960A cab. It's fucking awful. It was a complete headcase when I bought it.

I watched few videos on YT looks easy enough, but in my case I feel, it wont be easy and Ill be cursing a lot.
Im most worried about grill cloath change and speaker remove/install. Sometimes just one screw gives you the most hell. Lol

Im going to try on my old smal practice amp see how i get on with that before I do 4x12.

The grill cloth can be quite tricky but maybe do the tolex first and see how it goes out might look good with what's there. Bit of contrast and that.

With regards to tolex my best advice from mistakes I've made is wipe down each side of the cab as you move to it even though you've already done it...

The tiniest little speck of anything will look huge under the tolex.

Yeah, I've re-tolexed/re-grilled a couple of Marshalls, it's pretty easy going. I did have some struggles with getting screws out here and there, particularly with the castors as they'd been on there since the 70's, but these are manly struggles that you can take great pride in overcoming.

Thank you my friends for all the info, Tony good thinking about the grill cloth. It might work grey cloth against black tolex.

I’m not sure how to pull conners off, they have flat head like nail...

Annoying when they do that. Let me guess. Marshall?

You need to pry them. Screwdriver under the edge and lever them off.
