How is this thing, anybody using one? I'm going to start playing out a little bit again, and I just don't want to commit to hauling an amp and all of my pedals along with me. I don't really want to invest in a rack unit, either.

For the price they go for used, you're better off just spending a tad more and getting an FM3. It's only $150 more:

And you get current gen tech along with a warrantee. Expression pedals are cheap. I wouldn't pay $850 for an AX8 personally. They hold their used value but to me, that thing is worth about 5-600 bucks.

This just showed up tonight, looks great. It is a ton smaller than I expected.
How have you guys gone about setting this up? For now, I plan to just run it into the power amp of my Mark V until I come up with a FRFR setup for in my office. Have any suggestions on a good small, room sized FRFR?

The FM3 is tiny. I bought my AX8 before the FM3 came out. I bought the AX8 with the main intention of using it for practice and live shows, but if I'd known the pandemic was going to happen, I might've waited for the FM3 since I think the FM3 is the better choice for recording (though I'm 100% satisfied with my AX8 for recording and don't really need any more processing power than it has). I think the AX8 is the better choice for live performances, though.
Maybe in a few years I might buy the foot pedal version of the Axe-FX 4 or Axe-FX 5 or whatever (assuming they come out with something like that, Fractal does focus way more on rack units than floor units), but to be perfectly honest, I think the Axe-FX 1 / Ultra sounded awesome as it was.

You've played Axe stuff for quite some time now, haven't you?

I'm not sure I plan to record, but if I do some monitors might be in order. The problem is I built my computer as a gaming machine, so I've got no room for a sound card, etc.

They break up like you'd expect a $200 speaker to if you really crank the fuck out of them, but otherwise IMO you'd be hard pressed to get a cooler stereo rig for less. I had a pair of HD1221s back in the day which were $800/ea, and sound quality wise these are right there. The only difference is that the Mackies were 7 zillion times louder.

I've been messing with this thing for the past hour or so, and boy it kicks all sorts of butt. I built a preset off of a Friedman, and just set it up in a way I would normally set up one of my Mesas, and it came out really great. I'm excited to dive in more, and find some presets from guys who know what they're doing.

I've got mine setup to run mostly through a power amp into a 2x12 guitar cab. I found an amp that was "linear" and non-coloring (Orange Pedal Baby, Class AB 100W), so I've kept my power amp sims running.
On all my presets (which follow a template), there's a split right at the end. One line goes to the "FX Loop" block, which is where I've got the power amp connected, and the other line goes to a Cab block to the main output, which is XLR, which goes to my audio interface. It's reeeeeaaaally convenient. If I come up with a sweet riff playing through my cab, I literally just reach down, open Reaper, arm a track, and hit record.
